A New Zealand fuel and oil company, Big Tree, issued a series of cards carrying adverts on the reverse of the cards that took the form of anecdotes and rhymes appropriate to the company and the image of the front of the card. The advert, below, is taken from the reverse of the RPS Series card #1058, 'Say When', and although most of the cards came from the RPS Series several also came from the Valentines Bonzo cards as well as the Motor Emotion series where the advertisement appeared as part of the main design and advised Big Tree for Big Mileage.

The Sandeman Stanley Cotton Belting Company - Manufacturers of Belting, Conveyors & Wood Pulleys

The Sandeman Stanley Cotton Belting Company Limited started life as Sandeman cotton and jute manufacturers in Dundee. After taking over the Stanley Cotton Company the Sandeman Stanley Cotton Belting Company Limited was born. The company had British factories in Dundee, Glasgow, London and Manchester as well as overseas factories in the US and Australia. The trade cards shown below were issued as both advertising cards (plain backs) as well as postcards (standard postcard backs) and seem to have several editions which can be distinguished by the corners of each card.

The cards had one of three different corners, either the SB letters, a thistle or plain diamonds. The cards were also issued for the different factories and I have details of cards from 42a Southwark Street, London S.E. (or 42a Southwark Street, London S.E.1); 98 Broomielaw, Glasgow & 5 Cromford Court, Market Street, Manchester as well as one for Perth, Australia. The three blotters at the bottom were issued in Chicago, USA.

The image, above, used for the Phosferine postcard was later adapted, probably during the 1920's, for an Australian shop advertisement for Yeastons Tablets.

There has been some 'artistic licence' used here where the pram, as well as the clothes on the lady and the boy, have been brought up to date from the original which dated from around 1907.
